Zayo Group’s new CTO, Katinakis, joins the fiberco from Telstra, where he worked for five years, and is particularly interested in leveraging the possibilities of artificial intelligence and automation.

The group stated that his leadership will improve service delivery and network operations.

“We are at an inflection point in technology, with accessible AI, 5G, and satellite connectivity reshaping how we work,” Katinakis said in a statement.

“My mid-term vision for Zayo is for us to deliver network infrastructure that’s easy to turn up and manage across edge, core, and cloud, enhancing both connectivity and service.”

Since 2022, demand for bandwidth across Zayo’s connection technologies has grown dramatically, driven by the rapid and broad use of AI, next-generation cloud, satellites, and quantum.

Katinakis was drawn to Zayo because of its investment in important geographies and automated technologies, as the company attempts to address bandwidth demand by building a strong network infrastructure to satisfy rising demands.

“Ultimately, we aim to enable our customers to concentrate on their core business and not worry about transport connectivity because they’ll have Zayo facilitate the creation of resilient and secure networks,” he went on to say.

Katinakis will assist Zayo in advancing its network capabilities through considerable automation of its network infrastructure and operational processes, ensuring that it meets future capacity demands.

“When people think of AI, they think of ChatGPT,” he goes on to say. “But ChatGPT will never operate the network. There is a lot more AI we will utilize in the future, for everything from how to plan the network to how to manage capacity and customer interactions.”

“Our strategic appointment of Nikos underscores Zayos’ dedication to advancing network excellence,” stated Zayo CEO Steve Smith.

“His network experience and expertise, combined with Zayo’s capabilities and automated technology, will ensure our customers can meet and exceed connectivity expectations, now and in the future.”

Katinakis previously worked as EVP networks at Reliance Jio in India for four years, from 2014 to 2018.

He has also worked for Rogers in Canada, most recently as senior vice president of architecture and technology, network and IT, and CISO.

Katinakis also has vendor experience, having spent five years with Ericsson, where he served as CTO and VP Sales for the Swedish kit provider’s Canadian company.
