India is currently the country with the highest number of mobile malware attacks worldwide, according to a recent survey by cybersecurity company Zscaler.
According to the Zscaler ThreatLabz 2024 Mobile, IoT, and OT Threat Report, India currently accounts for 28% of all mobile malware threats globally, more than the US (27.3%) and Canada (15.9%).
The study examined a dataset including over 20 billion threat-related mobile transactions and related cyberthreats from June 2023 to May 2024.
According to a Zscaler blog, their research team monitored an increase in financially motivated mobile attacks, revealing a 29% increase in banking malware and a 111% increase in spyware.
About 9.5 lakh complaints, or one every 14 seconds, were filed with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal in the first five months of 2024, according to a media report from October.
Fake wedding cards were one of the most recent incidents in India. Scammers’ most recent tactic involves sending wedding card PDF documents via WhatsApp, which, when opened, infect the recipient’s device with malware.
Earlier this year, in August, a ransomware attack caused the closure of around 300 small Indian banks. A fifth of the nation’s approximately 1,500 rural regional and cooperative banks were impacted.
In addition, BSNL had two cyberattacks between December 2023 and June 2024, during which the state-owned telecom provider lost important security keys, SIM card information, home location registration data, and international mobile subscriber identification (IMSI) numbers.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the state minister of electronics and information technology at the time, described the attack on AIIMS Delhi in 2022, which lasted for more than 15 days, as “a conspiracy and planned by forces.”
According to Zscaler’s blog post, the sophistication of cyberattacks has also increased, and businesses should implement a zero-trust strategy to reduce cyberthreats and strengthen their security posture.
