Crisis centre was launched by the French government after cybersecurity experts identify Anonymous Sudan as a pro-Russian hacker organization that claimed responsibility for cyberattacks in online writings
A separate crisis center was launched to restore internet services after the French government announced on Monday that cyberattacks of “unprecedented intensity” had targeted many of its services.
Without giving further information, the government office of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal stated in a statement that the attacks began on Sunday night and affected several government ministries. It stated that “access to government sites has been restored and the impact of the attacks has been reduced for most services” by Monday afternoon.
In online forums, a hacker collective known as Anonymous Sudan—which cybersecurity experts view as pro-Russian—claimed responsibility for the attacks. The digital safety agency and the office of the French prime minister declined to address the allegation, specify what was targeted, or speculate on potential damages.
According to a French government employee, these were denial-of-service attacks, a prevalent kind of cybercrime in which a website is overloaded with data to the point of being rendered inoperable.
Prior to this summer’s Olympics in Paris and following many ransomware attacks that caused significant damage, particularly to hospitals in 2021, the French government has been working hard to strengthen cyber defenses.
Russia is allegedly waging a protracted online manipulation operation against the Western supporters of Ukraine, according to the French government. Among other things, this campaign involves mirroring the French Foreign Ministry website. President Emmanuel Macron has adopted a more assertive stance against Moscow and the conflict that Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated in the Ukraine crisis.
