Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Tuesday that cybersecurity is now a crucial component of national security and that it is “impossible in current times” for the nation to develop without it. Cybersecurity is no longer just a concern for the digital age.

“Today technology is being used extensively in all new initiatives, and the increasing use of technology is also creating many threats. And that is why cyber security is no longer limited to the digital world but has also become an important aspect of national security,” he said during the first foundation day celebrations of the I4C, or Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, here.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) agency known as the I4C was founded in 2018 with the responsibility of creating a national center of coordination to handle matters pertaining to cybercrime. In addition, Shah launched four I4C platforms: the Suspect Registry, the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Center (CFMC), the “Samanvaya” platform, and the Cyber Commandos program.

“CFMC was a vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi… Along with this, Cyber Commando, Samanvay platform, and Suspect Registry have also been inaugurated today. In a vast country like India, having a separate Cyber Suspect Registry for each state would not serve any purpose because states have their own boundaries but cyber criminals have no boundaries. It was the need of the hour to create a suspect registry at the national level and connect states with it to create a common platform to fight cybercrime,” Shah said.

An official stated that the I4C will provide a list of all the repeat offenders on their server in the Suspect Registry system. This information will be available for access by police officers in any state as well as bank authorities prior to bank account creation.

According to Shah, during the following five years, the government also intends to train and equip 5,000 cyber commandos. “The number of internet users in the country was 25 crore on March 31, 2014, which is now 95 crore on March 31, 2024… Due to the Digital India initiative, many facilities have become online in the country. 35 crore Jan Dhan accounts, 36 crore Rupay debit cards… 46% of the world’s digital transaction volume is taking place in India today. When digital accounts and digital transactions increase, the need for protection from digital fraud also increases a lot,” he said.
