Albanian authorities accuse Iranian-backed hackers of cyberattacks on the Institute of Statistics

Albanian cybersecurity authorities accuse a cyberattack gang “sponsored” by the Iranian government of assaulting the country’s Institute of Statistics earlier this month.

Albanian cybersecurity officials accused a hacking gang of cyberattacks “sponsored” by the Iranian government targeting the country’s Institute of Statistics earlier this month.

On February 1, the institute reported being the subject of a “sophisticated cyberattack” that impacted several systems.

On Tuesday, the National Authority for Electronic Certification and Cyber Security accused Homeland Justice, “an attacking group sponsored by the Iranian government,” of carrying out the hack on 40 systems.

Albania has already accused Iran. After a cyberattack in July 2022, the government blamed Iran’s Foreign Ministry. The bombing was supposed to be reprisal for Albania’s hosting of Iranian dissident members. It prompted the government to cut diplomatic relations with Iran.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have identified “Homeland Justice” as “Iranian state cyber actors.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry denied that it was behind the incident.

The United States, NATO, and the European Union backed NATO member Albania in the issue.
