Cyber frauds: Raliance Jio cautions customers

In the recent past, few cases related to cyber frauds have been reported to us, in which, imposters portray themselves as Jio representatives and insist on getting the information related to your Aadhaar, bank accounts, OTP etc.

Reliance Jio, on Monday, said the security of its customers is “always of utmost importance” and cautioned its customers against rising cyber frauds.

“For us at Jio, your security is always of utmost importance. In recent past, few cases related to cyber frauds have been reported to us, in which, imposters portray themselves as Jio representatives and insist on getting the information related to your Aadhaar, bank accounts, OTP etc. mainly on pretext of pending eKYC (Know Your Customer)”, the Mukesh Ambani-led telco said in an email notification to its customers.

Imposters claim that Jio services will be getting impacted if there is a failure to complete the eKYC, the telco explained.

“Usually a call back number is also mentioned to share the details. When the customer calls on the given number, he/she is asked to install a third-party app which allows imposters to take remote access to customer’s phone and the bank accounts associated with the device”, Jio explained the modus operandi.

According to the telco, it does not ask customers to download third-party applications as relevant information can be found in the MyJio app.

Customers should not click on suspicious links, attachments, Jio suggested and advised against responding to unsolicited communications.

Jio said, “Do not download remote access apps, as fraudsters will get access to your entire phone’s information”.

Jio’s rival Bharti Airtel, too, has been warning customers against cyber frauds.

Through an email communication in October, Gopal Vittal, CEO of Airtel warned telco’s customers against “alarmingly frequent” cyber frauds.

The telcos’ notifications come at a time when spam call rates have spiked in India again, with the country ranking fourth globally in this parameter, and as know your customer (KYC) scam has become the most common scam, according to caller ID, spam detection and blocking company, Truecaller.
