The government’s Automated Cars (AV) legislation is working on a legislative framework for driverless cars that should be in place by the end of 2024.

Driverless cars may be operational on some roads by 2026, according to Britain’s transport minister, Mark Harper.

Driverless cars are now prohibited on British roads, but according to Harper, a legislative framework for these vehicles should be in place by the end of 2024 as the government’s Automated Vehicles (AV) legislation is currently making its way through parliament.

“Probably by as early as 2026, people will start seeing some elements of these cars that have full driverless capabilities being rolled out,” Harper said.

“It’ll be gradual, so there’ll be companies rolling it out to be used in certain places.”

The technology, which has been tested in the US, has drawn criticism from some who claim that the cars can cause collisions. In October, California regulators ordered General Motors’ (GM.N.) driverless car business, Cruise, to remove its vehicles from state highways.

Road safety could be enhanced by the technology, according to British Minister Harper.

“Everything I’ve seen about automated vehicles and driverless car technologies is very focused on keeping people safe,” he stated.

The government has stated that the measure will safeguard consumers and advance safety in the autonomous vehicle sector. Under the legislation unveiled in November, Britain intends for the manufacturers of driverless cars to bear legal responsibility for any collisions rather than their owners.
