The French government claims being targeted by abnormally severe cyberattacks

According to the French government, cyberattacks of “unprecedented intensity” are targeting numerous of its services, and a special crisis center has been formed to restore online services

The French government announced Monday that some of its services have been targeted by cyberattacks of “unprecedented intensity,” and a separate crisis center has been formed to restore internet services.

The office of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal stated in a statement that the attacks began Sunday night and targeted numerous government agencies, but did not provide further specifics. By Monday afternoon, it stated that “the impact of the attacks has been reduced for most services, and access to government sites has been restored.”

In online writings, a group of hackers known as Anonymous Sudan claimed responsibility for the attacks. Cybersecurity experts believe Anonymous Sudan is pro-Russian. The French prime minister’s office and digital safety agency declined to comment on the claim or provide details about what was targeted or what damage was inflicted.

According to a French official, they were denial-of-service assaults, which entail bombarding a website with data in an attempt to overwhelm it and bring it down.

France’s government has undertaken a concerted effort to strengthen cyber defenses ahead of the Paris Olympics this year, as well as following costly ransomware attacks in recent years, notably one on hospitals in 2021.

The French government has accused Russia of undertaking a long-standing online manipulation operation against Ukraine’s Western allies, including duplicating the French Foreign Ministry website, among other tactics. President Emmanuel Macron has chosen a more aggressive stance against Moscow and the war that Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated in Ukraine.
