Geeta Batra Makes History with Appointment to World Bank’s GEF as Director

Indian economist Geeta Batra made history when she was named Director of the Independent Evaluation Office of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), a division of the World Bank, marking her as the first female representative of a developing nation. Batra’s name was unanimously approved during the 66th GEF Council Meeting in Washington on February 9, leading to this historic outcome.

Batra has shared her goals and priorities for her new position. She is currently the Chief Evaluator & Deputy Director for Evaluation at the GEF’s Independent Evaluation Office. Her objectives are to lead the IEO in environmental evaluation, present thorough evaluative evidence on the GEF’s performance, and develop the team’s competencies.

Batra has had an extraordinary career, having begun in New Delhi. Prior to joining the GEF’s IEO in 2015, she held a variety of positions at American Express, the World Bank, and the International Finance Corporation. She has a background in both finance and economics. Her vast experience and proficiency in assessing development initiatives make her an excellent fit for this new position.

Since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Global Environment Facility has been a major actor in environmental protection, funding various initiatives all around the world. The GEF tackles international environmental issues by forming alliances with nations, organizations, and civil society. The hiring of Batra holds significance as the organization persists in endorsing worldwide initiatives for sustainable development.

In addition to her career accomplishments, Batra enjoys reading historical biographies, sampling new foods, and going on outdoor adventures. She likes to indulge in her favorite Indian foods despite her hectic schedule. Batra is ideally positioned to make a big impact in her new position at the GEF’s Independent Evaluation Office because of her enthusiasm for development challenges and commitment to enhancing outcomes.
