Anthropic has shown that it is willing to work hard to secure the capital and reputable sponsors needed to compete with OpenAI.

Menlo Ventures is leading a $750 million fundraising round for artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic, according to a source with direct knowledge.

According to the source, the business was valued at $18.4 billion before the investment round.

Anthropic was co-founded by Dario and Daniela Amodei, brothers and former executives at rival OpenAI, which is supported by Microsoft. Anthropic has demonstrated efforts to obtain the funding and well-connected sponsors required to rival OpenAI and be leaders in the technology industry.

Its Claude AI models have competed with OpenAI’s GPT series for prominence.

Google (GOOGL.O) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O) have previously invested in the company; in the past few months, the corporations have agreed to contribute up to $2 billion and $4 billion, respectively.

The board of directors of rival OpenAI has discussed with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei the possibility of replacing leader Sam Altman and maybe combining the two AI businesses.
