Madhya Pradesh’s Cyber Police saved a guy from a multi-crore scam after he was put under “digital arrest” by cybercriminals in Bhopal for six hours. The incident represents a rare, potentially unique, live rescue of an individual trapped in digital captivity.

According to State Cyber Cell Additional Director General Yogesh Deshmukh, they were notified that Vivek Oberoi, a resident of Arera Colony in Bhopal, had been placed under “digital arrest” by cybercriminals.

The fraudsters used fabricated identities, including a “TRAI Legal Cell Officer”, “Cyber Crime Branch Officer SI Vikram Singh”, and “CBI Officer IPS DCP Mahesh Kalwania”, to intimidate Oberoi by accusing him of alleged involvement in financial crimes.

They forced him to use the Skype software, where he was interrogated for hours, using allegations of phony bank accounts created using his Aadhaar information and unsolicited marketing contacts.

The imposters also staged a fictitious questioning during this period in an effort to obtain private and banking information from Oberoi. They threatened to arrest him and hurt him if he didn’t comply, warning him not to tell his family about the incident.

The Cyber Police crew arrived at his home as the fraud developed and broke up the video chat.

Officers identified themselves and asked the con artists to provide identification. The digital captivity was quickly terminated by the scammers as soon as they disconnected the call.

The police then comforted Oberoi, explaining that a “digital arrest” is not permitted by law in India. They told him that all of the accusations and notices the con artists had given him were completely false.

Oberoi, who was relieved, claimed that if the rescue had not happened in time, he might have lost crores.

He added that he was about to cancel an important flight out of Madhya Pradesh because of the “digital arrest.” Oberoi went to the airport later to catch his flight.
