Sam Altman comes back to OpenAI Board

Altman will return to the OpenAI Board of Directors in his role as CEO.

After an independent investigation concluded that Sam Altman’s behaviour “did not mandate removal,” he will become a member of the OpenAI board.

The OpenAI Board special committee declared the review’s conclusion and reaffirmed its complete faith in Altman and Greg Brockman to continue leading OpenAI.

To come to this decision, the legal firm WilmerHale examined “more than 30,000 documents,” spoke with board members, and conducted staff interviews.

“We have unanimously concluded that Sam and Greg are the right leaders for OpenAI,” said Bret Taylor, Chair of the OpenAI Board, in a statement early on Saturday.

Altman will return to the OpenAI Board of Directors in his role as CEO. As part of its commitment to growth, the OpenAI Board recently announced the election of three new members.

These include Fidji Simo, CEO and Chair of Instacart and member of the Shopify board of directors; Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and Nicole Seligman, former EVP and Global General Counsel of Sony and President of Sony Entertainment.

“Their experience and leadership will enable the Board to oversee OpenAI’s growth and to ensure that we pursue OpenAI’s mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity,” said Taylor.

To best accomplish OpenAI’s goal, the board will give top priority to the important work it needs to do to improve the governance processes.

“We recognise the magnitude of our role in stewarding transformative technologies for the global good,” added Taylor.
