Home Minister Amit Shah has announced several new initiatives that constitute a significant step towards ensuring cyber security. These include training 5,000 ‘cyber commandos’, establishing a web-based data registry and the website to share information about cybercrimes, and creating a national registry of suspects to deter future crimes. The minister of the interior claimed that cybercrimes have “no boundaries” and that without cyber security, national security is unattainable.
During the inaugural foundation day celebration of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) in New Delhi on Tuesday, Mr. Shah declared the establishment of a Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC), which will include representatives from major banks, financial intermediaries, payment aggregators, telecom service providers, IT intermediaries, and law enforcement agencies from both states and Union territories.
Together, these organizations will address online financial crimes with swift response times and smooth collaboration. According to the minister, “cooperative federalism” in law enforcement is anticipated to be exemplified by the CFMC.
The creation of seven joint cyber coordination teams in Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam, and Guwahati, according to the Union Home Minister, has produced positive results. To further support the CyberDost initiative, I4C has started a successful awareness campaign across multiple social media platforms.
“To achieve our goal, we will have to make a precise strategy and move forward together in the same direction,” he said.
This is being accomplished with the Samanvay Platform, a Joint Cybercrime Investigation Facilitation System. It is an online module designed to serve as a one-stop shop, a cybercrime data repository, a platform for data exchange, crime mapping, data analytics, collaboration, and coordination.
Training Commandos
A dedicated unit of skilled workers in states/UTs and federal police agencies such as the CBI will be developed under the ‘Cyber Commandos’ initiative to combat threats to the nation’s cyber security environment. It is anticipated that the skilled cyber commandos will support federal agencies and states in protecting the internet.
To improve India’s financial ecosystem’s capacity to handle fraud risk, a registry of suspects modeled after the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) is being established in association with banks and financial intermediaries.
India accounts for 46% of all digital transactions worldwide, according to the home minister, who also noted that the country’s internet user base grew from 25 crore on March 31, 2014, to 95 crore on March 31, 2024. He said that because of the faster downloads and lower prices, data consumption has also increased by nearly 78 times, from 0.26 GB to 20.27 GB.
He claimed that the Digitial India project had made sure that a lot of amenities had gone online and that by 2024, ₹ 20.64 lakh crore worth of transactions had been completed digitally.
Over 600 alerts and blocked websites, social media pages, mobile applications, and accounts used by hackers have been issued by the I4C thus far.
