Turkey retaliates against Meta for releasing Instagram user data on Threads

Turkey’s competition regulators imposed an interim measure on Meta Platforms Inc. that is meant to obstruct data exchange between the Instagram and Threads platforms while investigating possible misuse of the company’s dominant market position.

As it looks into potential exploitation of the company’s dominant market position, Turkey’s competition authorities on Monday imposed an interim measure on Meta Platforms Inc. that is intended to impede data sharing between the Instagram and Threads platforms.

The authority opened a new inquiry into Facebook parent company Meta (META.O) in December in response to a potential legal breach involving competition law in relation to Meta’s social media platforms, Instagram and the more recent Threads.

The data collected and combined by these two apps may “violate competition law and cause irreparable damage” to the market, according to the authority, which stated that the temporary measure will stay in place until a final decision is made.

In a related probe into a notification that the company sent the users regarding sharing data, the Turkish authorities penalized Meta 4.8 million lira ($148,000) every day.

It claimed that the notice about data sharing between Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp services lacked adequate details and was not sufficiently transparent.

It further stated that the purpose of the user notification was to assist users in approving data sharing, which was not thought to be adequate to allay anti-competition concerns.
