UCL, IIT Delhi, and AIIMS New Delhi announce a partnership in order to increase medical technology innovation

The Delhi Indian Institute of Technology and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, have begun a groundbreaking new partnership with University College London (UCL) to jointly develop innovative medical technology solutions.

According to an official press release, the three universities will collaborate for the first time to use their respective fields of expertise to create innovative technologies that help address some of the most pressing health issues of our time.

AIIMS New Delhi, IIT Delhi, and UCL signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 22, 2024, pledging to collaborate in research and innovation.

The collaboration will open the door for the development of multidisciplinary solutions in the fields of healthcare, policy, and social sciences to address urgent global issues like air pollution, health issues, and climate change. It will aim to capitalize on industry relationships across all three schools.

Together, the universities seek to develop medical technology in cutting-edge fields like digital health, assistive technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum, surgical and treatment interventions, devices and implants, detection, diagnostics, and imaging, as well as sensing technologies.

Increasing continuous cooperation in areas like staff and student exchange, joint programs, seminars and conferences, and collaborative publications is another goal.

Professor M. Srinivas, Director (AIIMS), said, “This tripartite partnership between AIIMS, IIT Delhi, and UCL represents a transformative step in addressing some of the most pressing health and societal challenges. By combining our expertise in medical science, engineering, and global policy, we are creating a platform for MedTech innovation. Together, we aim to develop impactful solutions, set new benchmarks in medical technology and interdisciplinary research, and enhance patient care delivery.”

Dr. Michael Spence, UCL’s President and Provost, said: “At UCL, we recognize the difference that international collaboration can make to solving pressing global challenges, and we know the power that bringing together different disciplines can have. We are honored and excited to embark on this new partnership with two such renowned Indian institutions and know we will achieve great things together to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

The group visited the medtech facility mPRAGATI, a national center for the development of medical equipment and technology housed at IIT Delhi, as part of the signing ceremony for the trilateral agreement.

The three institutions will collaborate across disciplines for the first time. UCL has had long-standing bilateral partnerships with both AIIMS and IIT Delhi.

In the recent ‘India Special’ episode of the UCL podcast ‘Unlocking the SDGs: A blueprint for the future,’ which was hosted by Professor Monica Lakhanpaul and Professor Priti Parikh of UCL, Professor Sumit Malhotra of AIIMS and Professor PVM Rao of IIT Delhi discussed examples of creative community-based projects that address the Sustainable Development Goals.
