Users on Alphabet’s YouTube channel will soon be able to contribute “notes” that will provide context on certain of the firm’s videos, as part of a new feature.

As part of a new feature that will be first released in the US, users on Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) YouTube will soon be able to add “notes” that will provide context on certain of the company’s videos, the company announced on Monday.

In order to provide “relevant, timely, and easy-to-understand context” for videos, YouTube will ask a select group of users and creators to contribute notes during the initial test period.

For example, the notes could indicate to viewers when an older clip is incorrectly portrayed as a current occurrence, when a song is meant to be a parody, or when a new version of a product being reviewed is available.

A comparable tool on social networking site X is called Community Notes, and it lets some contributors add tags like “misleading” and “out of context” to postings in order to provide context.

Users in the United States will initially be able to access YouTube’s notes feature in English on their mobile devices. Before a possible wider release, YouTube noted that in this phase, independent assessors would score how helpful the notes are in order to educate the systems.

In the upcoming weeks and months, American viewers will begin to notice notes on videos.
