5G rolls out around the corner, Indian enterprises look to adopt

The 5G auction is set by the Government of India at the end of July 2022 and the time frame for the beginning of rollout is estimated to be August-September 2022

As the app economy has been unlocked by 4G, 5G is poised to unlock higher bandwidth, near real-time responses, the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and mission-critical products and applications. Leading to increased economic output and consumer willingness to pay for goods and services, it has the potential to significantly improve productivity, optimize service quality and reduce costs, according to Saurabh Kumar Sahu, MD and Lead – Communications, Media and Technology, Accenture in India.

Indian outlook

India is getting ready to adopt 5G and is all set to accelerate the digital penetration in the country. There are expected to be 611.97 million 5G connections in India by the end of 2030, said Purushothaman KG, Partner and Telecom Sector Leader, KPMG in India.

The 5G auction is set by the Government of India at the end of July 2022 and the time frame for the beginning of rollout is estimated to be August-September 2022.

“5G will inevitably increase the data footprint as enterprises start to work on use cases that will be data intensive. To process large volumes of data, data centers, edge devices and cloud infrastructure will play a crucial role. Therefore, inevitably organizations will need to consider moving to a nimble and sustainable architecture for their data centers or cloud infrastructure,” said Sahu.

Should enterprises start experimenting with 5G use cases?

India is not necessarily playing catch-up but rather starting its journey at the right time as 5G as a technology, globally is still in its nascent stage. As the time in firming up use-cases, building a business case and managing regulations will take time, IT leaders in India should start the journey immediately, Sahu maintained.

Purushothaman believes that IT leaders are already experimenting with the potential 5G use cases, developing POC, and investing in infrastructure development which will make them ready to grasp the opportunity of the rollout.

“Highest traction of 5G use cases is seen in the manufacturing sector with the key focus themes to optimize operations, improve efficiency and maintain quality, followed by the healthcare, government and public, Telecom and Media & Entertainment,” he added.

5G is set to make an impact almost instantly within the coming five years. For enterprises, it will make the concept of ‘smart factories’ and ‘connected workplaces’ a reality.

“Advanced wireless technologies can play a critical part in a company’s ability to link its equipment and devices and are important to an organization’s ability to fully utilize each technology. However, security risks arising from many unprotected network entry points, as well as a lack of backward compatibility with the existing systems and devices, are challenges that must be overcome as sophisticated wireless technologies mature,” said Peeyush Vaish, Partner and Telecom Sector Leader, Deloitte India.

5G’s impact on Cloud and Data center

5G will change the paradigm of data centers with the massive amount of data transfer that 5G networks will carry at greater rates, Purushothaman said. Edge data center needs to develop to support such volume and at this speed with seamless and failure-free architecture.

“Unlike traditional data centers, the goal will be to construct a distributed data center solution that allows offering services efficiently across their geographic scope. Due to ultra-low latency of 5G it requires the shift data processing as close to the destination locations as possible. The edge data centers must be built to accommodate the anticipated demand for MEC-based 5G services,” he added.

Cloud computing is said to have a long-term impact on the new digital era, thanks to improved wireless technologies such as 5G. To speed up their transformational journeys, companies are already building hybrid cloud architectures and implementing new cloud-based apps.

“As a result of this, organizations will face a massive influx of data sets which will open the door for new technologies to assist businesses in unlocking intelligence and effectively utilizing data for increased profitability and improved customer service. By using cloud services at the edge, 5G will enable data-intensive businesses like manufacturing, retail, and logistics to manage operations centrally. 5G will aid in the delivery of deep analytics, AI, and machine learning to data centers,” avered Vaish.
