Eight suspects have been detained in connection with a statewide cyber fraud that the Gurugram Cyber Cell has exposed. The defendants are said to have defrauded victims out of over Rs 25.67 crore throughout India.
A significant advance in the battle against cybercrime has been made thanks to the operation, which was spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crime Priyanshu Diwan and has revealed 6,864 complaints connected to these scammers.
The Cyber Crime Police Station teams in Gurugram, led by ACP Diwan, reportedly uncovered several people who allegedly employed different methods to deceive victims after making a number of arrests between August and October 2024.
These schemes included impersonation scams, in which the suspects utilized false identities on social media sites like Facebook or pretended to be representatives of well-known corporations, like FedEx, or phony investment opportunities.
Karun Sehgal, who was arrested on August 26 from Defence Colony, Ambala, is one of the accused. Sehgal was taken into custody under a formal complaint by Head Constable Nitin, who was assigned as the investigating officer in this matter.
Four further suspects, Deepak, Satyanarayan Das, Sonam, and Kiran, were later taken into custody by police on October 23 and 24 in connection with a formal complaint.
Head Constable Chunnilal and the Gurugram police squad were in charge of this operation. A FIR brought by ASI Pawan also resulted in the arrest of three additional people: Sumit, Pukhraj Singh, and Aditya Sharma, between October 14 and 18.
Five cell phones that were retrieved from the accused were subjected to forensic analysis as part of the inquiry.
Gurugram Police, in partnership with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), discovered evidence that connected the suspects to 306 distinct cyber fraud cases around India.
Three of the nine cases in Haryana are within the purview of the Cyber Crime Police Station East in Gurugram.
The accused used sophisticated techniques, including investment-based schemes and fictitious identities, to trick unwary victims.
Given that cybercrimes are becoming more widespread and sophisticated in India, the operation emphasizes the importance of cooperation and vigilance in the fight against them.
