Technology leaders need to understand how their users interact with IT systems and what can be done to make them happier

This is an exclusive interview conducted by the Editor Team of CIO News with Radheshyam Menaria, Head IT at Cello Group

How did you plan your career path to be a successful technology leader?

I focused on my strengths, studied what I liked, and tried to build a complete picture of my future career path. As a result, I developed a strong interest in technology and learned how important it was to develop my career as an IT professional.

I also watched other successful leaders in my organisation so that I could learn how they achieved the results they had. Ultimately, this gave me the confidence that I would be able to lead my team effectively and deliver results. Doing the right thing at the right time will always propel you to new heights.

What challenges you faced in your career path and how did you overcome them?

Going through challenges is a great way to understand people’s needs and appreciate their differences, pushing you to be creative, innovative, and hardworking. I believe challenges are always an opportunity to learn something new. I am fortunate to have all the support from my organization, senior leadership, and colleagues to address the challenges of new technology implementation, adaptability, and end-user satisfaction.

Understanding the business and technology requirements of your company helps you understand which tools you need to use. This can also mean understanding what will help most with the future success of your company.

What are the challenges faced by technology leaders today while implementing digital technologies?

Technology leaders should have a good understanding of business and how an implemented technology will complement the company. Technology leaders should focus on user adoption and the mutual benefit of the organization. User adoption is interrelated with business intelligence; thus, they need to consider its impact on business. If one module needs to be integrated with many other modules, then it will slow down the process. Technology leaders need to understand how their users interact with IT systems and what can be done to make them happier.

How can technology leaders overcome the challenges faced?

This problem is one that requires a multifaceted, long-term, and strategic approach. Technology leaders can overcome the challenges faced by keeping their organisation aligned with current market trends and delivering sustainable competitive advantage. Technology leaders are faced with many challenges. These include not only business challenges and change management but also technical issues that can prevent them from achieving the desired outcomes. In order to overcome these challenges successfully; it is necessary to develop a clear vision of what needs to be done, closely work with immediate stakeholders (teams and boards) to define strategy, and make sure there are no unnecessary delays either in terms of development or procurement of technology.

Any best practices, industry trends, or advice you’d give to fellow technology leaders to help them succeed professionally?

My learning sessions and conferences are always part of my daily professional duties. It is critical to get started at all costs because technology evolves over time. So, it is wise to stay updated on the latest technology trends, so that you will be able to offer better solutions for your organization.
