Vestager scheduled to meet with CEOs of major technology companies, including Apple, in US

The EU’s antitrust chief, Margrethe Vestager, will meet with the CEOs of Apple, Alphabet, Broadcom, and Nvidia in the United States next week.

Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust chief, will meet with the CEOs of Apple (AAPL.O), Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Broadcom (AVGO.O), and Nvidia (NVDA.O) in the United States next week, her communications adviser said on Friday.

The meetings come a month after Vestager returned to her job following her unsuccessful bid to lead the Luxembourg-based European Investment Bank, with antitrust experts expecting her to be tougher on companies in merger and competition investigations.

Vestager will visit Apple CEO Tim Cook, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, its top legal officer Kent Walker, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in San Francisco and Palo Alto on Thursday and Friday, her adviser Christina Holm Eiberg said.

She will also meet OpenAI CEO Mira Murati and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon.

The discussions will center on European digital legislation and competition policy.

The meeting with Cook comes after Apple last year offered rivals access to its tap-and-go mobile payments systems, which are used for mobile wallets, in a move to settle Vestager’s investigation and avoid a potentially large fine.

According to people familiar with the matter, the European Commission is likely to solicit feedback from competitors and customers this month, while no final decision has been taken.

Vestager’s meeting with Alphabet takes place on the same day that an adviser to Europe’s top court is set to make a non-binding recommendation on whether judges should accept or reject Alphabet unit Google’s appeal of a 2.42-billion-euro ($2.6-billion) EU antitrust fine imposed for market abuse related to its shopping service.
